Human Patient Simulator

Human Patient Simulator

The Human Patient Simulator is the department’s latest high-tech acquisition, making it the only anaesthesia department to possess and use this unique piece of machinery. Costing over 3 crore rupees, the machine is capable to communicating with its operators. It can simulate situations which usually present as life-threatening emergencies, and so enables students to sharpen critical skills which otherwise would require real-life calamities. These situations include polytrauma, cardiac emergencies, respiratory emergencies and certain iatrogenic complications of commonly used drugs and therapies. Responses of the trainees can be monitored real-time, and the trainees can observe responses to their interventions in real time. The equipment used to monitor the virtual patient is the same as everyday hospital equipment, which keeps the experience very realistic. This simulator has been used to train a wide variety of professionals, which includes undergraduates, postgraduate trainees in anaesthesia, as well as for refresher courses of medical officers of the Indian Armed Forces.

The Department has a unique and invaluable anaesthesia museum, which is the only one of its kind in the country. The museum has equipment right from the dawn of anaesthesia, and offers a visual tapestry of the development of Anaesthesia as a speciality over the years. The museum is the result of contributions from past and current faculty members. In addition to being a learning resource, it also is symbolic of the heritage of Anaesthesia. It receives many visitors from medical colleges all over the country.
