The Department of Dental Surgery at Armed Forces Medical College, Pune was established in May 1955 to meet the mandatory requirement of Medical Council and Dental Council of India to run various medical, dental and para-dental courses with the objective of training Armed Forces personnel. This department has the distinction of being first in the country, to conduct Dental Hygienist and Dental Technician courses, recognized by Dental Council of India. This department is dedicated to creating an academic environment where the mind is trained to share dogma, question what is not proven and accept only the truth to plumb the depths of our sphere of specialty for knowledge and excellence while still following the principle of convergence of all disciplines of medicine for the patient’s good and to encourage research that is oriented towards indigenization and national self reliance. The department consists of 4 divisions.

DIVISION OF ORAL AND MAXILLOFACIAL SURGERY
The division is capable of undertaking all types of major and minor oral and maxillofacial surgery. The division operates more than 370 cases per year under GA.
DIVISION OF PERIODONTICS
The division is capable of undertaking all type of periodontal cases. Approx 20 cases are handled in the division. Digital records of patients are maintained by the division.
DIVISION OF PROSTHODONTICS AND CROWN & BRIDGE
The Division of Prosthodontics undertakes all types of oral & maxillofacial rehabilitation cases referred from other specialities and malignant disease treatment centre. The average number of cases treated is approx 30 cases per month.
DIVISION OF ORTHODONTICS AND DENTOFACIAL ORTHOPEDICS
The Division of Orthodontics is the dental specialty pertaining to prevention, interception and correction of malocclusion and other abnormalities of the dentofacial region. Th e division takes up approx 130 new cases annually.
