The Department of Pediatrics, Armed Forces Medical College, Pune was established in May 1965, with Lt Col AR Subramanian as the first Professor & Head of the Department, who later rose to the position of Director General Armed Forces Medical Services. The department has been enriched over the years by contribution of its faculty and has graduated a large number of undergraduate and post graduate students who have brought laurels to the institution.
At present, Department of Pediatrics functions as an independent department with teaching commitments for Undergraduates, B. Sc (Nursing), Post Certificate B. Sc (Nursing), Orthopedic Nursing and Service oriented courses like - MOJC and Advance course in Paediatrics. Postgraduate training in MD (Pediatrics) is imparted as per directives of University of MUHS. Pediatrics was introduced as a separate paper at the final MBBS part-II examination since 2001. MD (Pediatrics) is with MUHS, Nashik with effect from 2006 batch.

The department also offers daily OPD services for both service and civilian children including Subspeciality OPD in neonatology, Pulmonology, cardiology, neurology and nephrology on the following days.
