Dept of Radiation Oncology & Malignant Diseases Treatment Centre

Historical Aspects :


Forensic     The Malignant Diseases Treatment Centre (MDTC), Command Hospital, Southern Command, Pune 411 040 was started in the year 1973, with Dept of Radiation Oncology, Surgical Oncology, Medical Oncology, and Onco Pathology. Founder members of MDTC were from all concerned specialities, namely


1. Surgeon – Surg Capt GP Christian, NM and Maj Harcharan Singh

2. Radiation Oncol – Maj Sambandam and Maj

Sampuran Singh
3. Onco Pathologist – Lt Col M Chakraborty
4. Medical Oncologist – Maj MP Jaiprakash joined subsequently in 1976.



This centre did yeoman service to our clientele as the only Oncology centre of armed forces till other comprehensive centres with Radiotherapy facility came up as follows:



  • 1. Army Hospital (R&R), Delhi in July 1999
  • 2. INHS Asvini, Mumbai in April 2007
  • 3. Comd Hospital (CC) Lucknow in July 2008
  • 4. Comd Hospital (EC) Kolkata in Jan 2009
  • 5. Comd Hospital (AF), Bengaluru in Mar 2009

The department of Radiation Oncology was started (in the year 1973) with one Cobalt Teletherapy machine (Theratron 80, AECL). Later, in the year 1984 Manual Brachytherapy was added to give comprehensive treatment with radiation. The Department was modernized with sophisticated equipments in the year 1998.

  • 2. Simulator machine (Imagin)
  • 3. High Dose Rate Brachytherapy (Microselectron 18 Channels)
  • 4. Treatment Planning System Multi data
  • 5. Mould Room Accessories, Styrofoam cutter.

Facilities expected in the future:


  • 1. Linear Accelerator with Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)/
    Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) facility.
  • 2. Telecobalt Bhabhatron Machine with MLCs
  • 3. CT Simulator
  • 4. 3-D Treatment Planning System.

Teaching Facility:


Dept of Radiation Oncology is conducting Two year Radiation Technologist course for Armed Forces personnel only.


No of patients treated per year :         200-300 patients.


No of patients Simulated for Treatment planning per year :         700-1000 patients.


Research Activities :




1. “Role of serial measurements of serum squamous cell carcinoma (SCC-Ag) antigen levels as a prognostic & predictive marker in carcinoma cervix: a pilot study”. AFMRC (Armed Force Medical Research Council) project.




Achievements :




  • Regular two year RT Tech course started in the year 1999 and four batches completed the course successfully.
  • Regular four year B.Sc. in PMT course started in year 2012 and till date six batches completed the course successfully and three batches are under training.
  • Software Registry for RT patients started in the year 1999
  • At present Physicist Dr A.Balraj Scientist “G” (DRDO) of this Dept is an active member in board of directors for School of Basic Medical Sciences, at University of Pune.
  • Regular teaching conducted for MD trainees, Nursing offrs.
  • Weekly Tumour board meetings are regularly conducted in the department.
  • Round the clock Blood Irradiation carried out.
  • New Building adjacent to this dept is being incorporated for HDR Brachytherapy treatment and ward of 16 beds.
  • Case for procurement of Linear Accelerator compatible with state of art IMRT/IGRT is in final stage of processing.
